Rakhi / Raksha Bandhan Festival Introduction

India and Hindu religion has many festivals. Many cultures across the world have many festivals which are similar and celebrated for about the same reasons but in their own customs. Rakhi is one unique festival, which is celebrated in the name of a sister and brother relationship. Rakhi has another name by Raksha Bandhan. Means, brother giving a promise to sister that he will protect her in difficult times. On this occasion, the sister ties the traditional Rakhi to her brother and wish him a long and prosperous life, in return usually brother gives her some gift, could be money or in any format, but it is not so mandatory.

Historical Stories on Rakhi Festival

There are many historical stories around this Rakhi festival. One is in Mahabharatha, Sri Draupadi ties the Rakhi to Lord Sri Krishna, in return Sri Krishna gives her a wish that, whenever she needs rescuing, he will be there to help her. He stood by his words when Draupadi needs help at the time of Kauravas were insulting her by tearing her clothes.

Another famous story which has been told in Indian history is about Roman King Alexander. When king Alexander was in the danger of defeating the war against Indian king Purushottam, Roxana, the wife of Alexander has sent King Purushottam the Rakhi and seeks to save her husband King Alexander. As history tells that the war between King Alexander and King Purushottam was the last one for king Alexander. There were many versions told about this war, but in India this Rakhi episode was one of the most popular and circulated among Indians.

How Rakhi Festival is Celebrated

Rakhi festival celebrated in the Sravan purnima month (Sravan is Indian calender month, purnima = Full moon day). Usually the festival is celebrated between sister and brother. But usually cousins also celebrate the festival. Rakhi is also celebrated between the sister-in-laws (your brother’s wife or bhabhi). In some parts of the country, even sisters do tie the Rakhi and is called as Lumba Rakhi.

Earlier days sister used to make a mandatory visit to brother's place to tie the Rakhi, but because of today's employment and the life style.
